My take on the whole DRM/music piracy/99˘ iTunes stuff
Posted by trm96 | Filed under Technology News
It seems to be a bit out of control with all of this bullshit, ok sure if you pirate music the there is on money to be made on said music. The only thing is that the people that are responsible for the making the music responsible (artists, producers, engineers) are not being paid all the money for the music, but rather the industry execs (RIAA) are "stealing" the most of the money. IMHO the RIAA are the true thieves. The ones that are really getting hurt in this; pirates vs RIAA; are the people actually responsible. We have no need for a third party such as the RIAA, the bottom line is that one pays for music (buying a CD or downloading an iTunes M4P) that money should go to those responsible and no other party. As i have stated before on my other website I refuse to pay for any of the music I acquire unless at least 3/4 of my money is going to the right people. As for the 99˘ iTunes music remaining 99˘, I consider it a victory for not only us (the consumers) but for the music industry as a whole. There is no need to charge any more for such content and thus further pad the RIAA’s pockets. On to DRM, I am not for it heres why: If I pay money for a song, I should be able to do what ever I want with that song. I should be able to play it on any mp3 player not just ones that support the encryption method used to secure it. Not only that but share it with anyone who wants it (via P2P or burn it to a CD to give to someone). I think DRM just restricts what I can do with the item I legally paid for. Imagine for a moment that you buy a car and Ford or maybe GM used something like DRM; you could only drive it on approved roads or could not let your friend or your kid drive it unless you got permission form GM or Ford first. Leopard to get a torrent client?
Posted by trm96 | Filed under MacOS
It seems as though the good people over at Apple are throwing around the idea of a bittorrent client in their new OS. They would offer “a unique sharing reward system where the user can share bandwidth and get rewards, such as credit in the iTunes store.”

Leopard to maybe run Windows apps natively.
Posted by trm96 | Filed under MacOS
Thats right you heard (or read) it correct! According to Slashdot: It is believed that Apple “will offer in OS X 10.5 the ability to run native Windows XP applications with no copy of XP installed on the machine at all.”, and that “Apple will offer Windows Vista as an option for those big customers who demand it.”. Thats all according to Robert X. Cringely on “the reason behind Apple’s recent strategy of Boot Camp.” It’s going to be interesting to see just what Apple has in store for Leopard and as well as OS X as a whole. These certainly are strange times we are in.

Your password gone, replaced by a picture?

It sounds strange but what if to login to say your account on your bank’s website you just had to click a picture? Call me crazy (maybe I am) but it’s a very plausible way to authenticate your login. A great sample of this is here.

Last night Detroit rapper and D12 member Proof was gunned down last night in the CCC club on Eight Mile Road on Detroit’s east side. “Proof, whose real name is Deshaun Holton, was dead on arrival at St. John Conner Creek, an outpatient treatment facility that used to be a hospital.” It is unknown “what Proof was doing at the bar, which was operating outside of its licensed hours.”

Mac do Windows too? (Updated)
Posted by trm96 | Filed under MacOS, Technology News
What does this mean…? Well, Apple went and made a boot loader so you could easily dual boot OSX with WinXP on your new shinny new intel based Mac. Apple has made it’s “Boot Camp” software available for free download on their site. Included with this beta release are Windows based drivers for Mac hardware, included of witch are: a drivers for the eject button on the Apple keyboard, Bluetooth, Graphics, Networking, Audio, AirPort wireless, and Brightness control for built-in displays. Apple also says “Word to the Wise Windows running on a Mac is like Windows running on a PC. That means it’ll be subject to the same attacks that plague the Windows world. So be sure to keep it updated with the latest Microsoft Windows security fixes.” Also “EFI and BIOS Macs use an ultra-modern industry standard technology called EFI to handle booting. Sadly, Windows XP, and even the upcoming Vista, are stuck in the 1980s with old-fashioned BIOS. But with Boot Camp, the Mac can operate smoothly in both centuries.” It also seems that the folks at Apple will build in Boot Camp into the next version of OSX called Leopard (10.5). It seems as though Boot Camp is a Universal Binary (meaning it will run under PPC as well as Intel) even though it’s only supported on Intel Macs. Could this mean that eventually it will support multi-booting on PowerPC machines? I will be cool to find out how it will be supported on Leopard, will you be able to dual-boot PPC distros of Linux?
Who would have ever thought that you would ever be able to dual boot WinXP and MacOS, and that Apple would get so behind it and push it forward? These certainly are strange times for Apple, lets just hope they are making the right move…
System Requirements:
* MacOSX Tiger (10.4.6)
* The latest Firmware update
* At least 10GB free hard disk space
* An Intel-based Mac
* A printer for the instructions (You’ll want to print them before installing Windows, really.)
* A bona fide installation disc for Microsoft Windows XP, Service Pack 2, Home or Professional (No multi-disc, upgrade or Media Center versions.)
