I can name several sites where the www. is required, since there's no proper redirection setup, or they've configured their servers to only accept connections from www.domain.com (instead of doing it properly). I ran into a snag a while ago, where my previous department webpage showed two different pages depending on whether you included the www or not. Way to go people.
