Are SSDs the future?

A lot of major Hard drive manufacturers are planning to bring solid state hard drives (SSDs) to the marketplace, but is it really the future of the hard drive?

SSDs have some distinct advantages over traditional hard drive technology. First off there is really no capacity limit, SSDs don’t rely on how much data you can fit onto a glass platter. SSDs are usually faster than traditional hard drives, there are no moving parts. They can be more reliable in that because they have no moving parts there are no parts to get physically damaged (read/write heads, platters, motors, actuators, ect) and thus have a lot higher working shock rating. They can use l a lot less power (especially important when used in notebook or server configurations) depending on the capacity. There are also many other benefits to SSDs (too many to list).

With that said do you really want to trust your data to what basically amounts to a really big thumb (or flash) drive? I remain a tad bit skeptical as my data (all 2.2TB or so) is way to important to me to trust a solid state hard drive at least right now. Also I really can’t afford to be buying these rather expensive and rather low capacity drives ATM.
